[Matlab-emacs-discuss] Syntax highlighting not working

I recently installed matlab-emacs on emacs 26.0.50 on Ubuntu. Everything
seems to be working properly, but I am not getting syntax highlighting when
opening *.m files using global-font-lock-mode. I do however get
highlighting in the matlab-shell.

I'm not sure exactly what other information might be relevant for teasing
out this issue, but it makes matlab-mode difficult to use.
