For V5 MAT files, the maximum array size is approximately 2 GB. For the HDF5 format (v7.3), I am not aware of a llimit with HDF5 so it should go up to the limits of your system.

My run stops in a line where Pagesize is indicated. What is a recommended page size if I want to create a double array with 8 million rows and 10-15 columns?

I have no idea what you are talking about. I have never done anything with the memory page size. An 8e6 x 15 array of doubles is almost 1 GB which should be no problem as long as you have enough RAM. Perhaps you can write a simple program and post the code if you still have a problem. Also, if you use the flag for matio to not copy memory, allocating the array has nothing to do with matio.
