Version 2.5: the install target prints this:

The databases in [/usr/local/share/applications] could not be updated.
-- Up-to-date: /disk-samsung/freebsd-ports/math/mathgl/work/stage/usr/local/share/mime/packages/mgl.xml
I/O error : Permission denied
I/O error : Permission denied
Failed to write XML file; For permission problems, try rerunning as root

Install is into the stage directory and no databases should be updated there. This is done by the package manager.

Just follow instruction "try rerunning as root" if you install mathgl globally.
