This software development idea involves adding the concept of wear and tear on equipment, vehicles, and buildings. Wear from use over time makes these items more likely to malfunction and reduces their value to a settlement.
The simulation currently tracks the amount of active use time for equipment, vehicles, and settlements between maintenance and increases the likelihood of a malfunction based on this factor. Wear would be tracked in the same way, but would not be reset to zero each time maintenance is completed on the item. Wear would also increase the likelihood of the item malfunctioning. This would be less of a factor than time between maintenance for the short term, but could build to be a much greater factor over the long term.
Wear would also reduce the value of the item to the settlement, as well as the amount of parts and resources that could be salvaged from the item. There might be a point where it makes sense for the settlers to salvage an item for parts as it is too worn to be of much value.
We should probably implement wear at the same time we implement salvaging or else the settlers will end up stuck with a lot of worn down equipment, vehicles, and buildings and no way to recover their materials.
