I have yet to figure out what I am supposed to do with the simulator, and was wondering if anybody can give me some tips on what to do to make things interesting. I understand of course that it isn't some fast paces action game, but surely there are more things to do than track the rovers as they run about?

Sorry if the program isn't entertaining enough for you. We've been mainly concentrating on the AI and world modeling, as well as letting the user view what's going on in the simulation.
User interaction is limited at this point to being able to edit the simulation's configuration files. You can add people, rovers and settlement, set simulation properties, and edit malfunctions and medical problems. Some of these require that you restart the simulation for them to go into effect.
The plans for the next version include having a growing population and letting the settlers build new settlements and equipment. We also plan on adding an event logger that will let you view a person's activities over time.
I'm not sure if we'll be adding more user interaction with the simulation in the future to make it more game-like. It would be interesting, but we're mainly concentrating on improving the simulation for now.

It is entertaining and that, and I am very impressed by it, a very serious piece of software. Of course I realise that everything can't be a game, although I wish it could. :) I also think that the mars simulator would transfer nicely into a game, although it might be a lot of work.
I have to say I am also impressed that you only have one class that is over 600 lines of code, you are much better programmers than I am... :)
