One of our members ran across Mars sim and provided the link. COOL CONCEPT!! You may have heard of Orbiter. It is a space simulator in which one can fly a limitless variety of spacecraft on any kind of mission imaginable anywhere in the solar system.
The Orbiter community is populated many enthusiastic members who, aside from spending time playing their favorite space sim, enjoy contributing addons and vessles to use with this exciting program. Much of the program is open source (via config files) and it is all 100% free.
A while back, someone started "Air Orbiter", a virtual arline. Though popular at first, Air Orbiter lost its appeal due to the fact that the missions were "self assigned" and lacked any real purpose, aside from transporting imaginary cargo and passengers to arbitrary destinations.
I'd like to use this thread to explore the possibility of integrating Mar-Sim with some sort of resource tracking software with the goal of scheduling missions that are critical to the maintenance of the mars colonies. This not only gives Air Orbiter pilots a reason to fly missions, but it also necessitates communication between "Colonists" and "Ground Control" and gives a greater sense of community between the fans of these two great simulators.
After initial implementation of the above plan, it would also be cool to explore increasing the complexity of the operations required for these resupply missions (like low earth orbit resupply and re-fuelling missions, or replacing colonists who are coming off rotation). This would then increase the complexity of Mars-Sim by encouraging colonist leaders to evaluate personell and resources and make changes within a planned framework, without simply changing config files.
I'm really looking forward to discussing this idea with everyone. Cheers.
