First I want to say: It's a very interesting project, needed in the coming future. It's tremendous important to think before to send a vehicle to mars itself, manned or unmanned. This brings me the idea of interaction between mars and a kind of robot. Possibly this is already a common idea in the project. I myself have a project on sourceforge for very speedy neural nets, with the possibility as behaving as a human.

What about a interaction as if the user is sitting on earth inside the space agency's control center? He could select and train the next settlers or define goals, and so on. Maybe with a delay of 90 simulated minutes, between the user submitted the action and when it is received by the settlers.

That's an interesting idea. We were discussing adding interactive elements to the simulation on the developers mailing list.
I'm not sure if an Earth-based space agency would be running the show in the stage of Martian colonization that were trying to represent - early permanent settlements. Still, we'd like to leave the simulation open to several different colonization scenerios.
One problem with the user giving direct commands to the settlers is that there are often a lot of factors that might prevent the settler from performing the task or starting the mission. The settler might already be in the middle of something that shouldn't be interrupted, such as fixing an emergency malfunction.
Perhaps the user could set priorities for individual settlements. For example, the user could set the priority for Port Zubrin to be research. The inhabitants would concentrate on performing research and going on exploration missions. Other priorities could be expansion, collecting resources, etc.

how can one interract with the simulation?
