Due to the large range of mouse sensitivity values, the
sliders are a bit dodgy to handle. I've found two
things: first, because the vertical axis is more
limited than the horizontal one, it needs (for normal
FPS-like controls) to be set to a higher sensitivity
than the horizontal axis; and second, due to the scale
applied, horizontal sensitivity becomes, IMHO, almost
unplayable at values >16384. I've found from tinkering
with the Aleph One Preferences file that a sensitivity
of horizontal 16384, vertical 25088 is high, but still
playable for me (similar to the sensitivity I use for
most other shooters).
I have thought of two things that might help with that:
a "lock values" option that locks the sensitivity
sliders together, so players can adjust their mouse
sensitivity while keeping the ratio of vertical :
horizontal sensitivity where they have set it, and a
reduction of the maximum value for horizontal
sensitivity to a lower, more sensible value (maybe
something in around 20000) to make the slider more
handle-able.

I'm reclassifying this as a feature request as I think that's more
accurate.
That said, these are sensible suggestions that merit consideration
if not action, IMO. I suppose if most of the range is useless for
just about everyone, the range ought to be narrowed; I don't know
that this is currently the case, but when I wrote the original
(single) slider, I did intentionally "err" on the side of a (much)
wider range than I thought was probably necessary.
I think either a "lock" toggle or a re-casting of the two sliders as
"Sensitivity" and "X-Y balance" would probably be helpful to most
folks. Ideally of course it would be possible to adjust these in-
game, for tuning the settings with rapid feedback, but that's
probably tricky enough to be beyond the scope of this request.
