Thanks Carlo for your observations, I fully agree with your proposal for these important improvements. I would just add that a better handling of both mapfile and layer metadata would definitely lead to a better map documentation (map metadata could contain map and layer descriptions). I would suggest to move this discussion in the developer list and that you put your proposal in a more structured and "formal" RFC on mapstorer wiki. The RFC will be discussed and examined by the steering comitee and all interested users can participate to the discussion, and after a vote the proposal will be approved or rejected.
