#50 Mapivi crashes trying to create thumbnails

I made a bunch of links to photos in a folder (photos were in other folders, links copied to folder Mapivi is to deal with)
Start Mapivi. It asks "There are xx thumbnails to generate. Shall I do this now?" If I say "OK", Mapivi crashes - disappears.
If I say "cancel", and then select "Rescan Folder" from the "File" menu, it asks again about the thumbnails, but does not crash.
This time it puts up an error window. When I click on "Stacktrace", I get

I am using Ubuntu 11.10, and sometimes use Gnome Classic (today), Gnome-Shell, Unity, and occasionally E17. I don't know if it makes any difference what window manager I use...

If I repeatedly run (crash) Mapivi, the number of thumbnails it wants to generate gets smaller and smaller, by one each time, I think...
