Hello Cameron!
Thanks for your reply, your link was not working though.
Could you mail me that document ?
I hope that this is the correct way to answer in this group, sending the
letter
to you and a cc to the list.
The application I am trying to build, which has been done in Oracles
MapViewer,
is to use a basemap of Sweden and then draw out the archeological sites as
polygons.
Wanting to evaluate the Open Source GIS products, hoping that I am on the
right track.
The spatial data is in Oracle spatial.
Trying to create my application by editing the mapbuilder application,
if that succeeds than I might be on my way.
Regards, i
ps.
I registered a datastore as Oracle.
But when looking in the log for Geoserver I see the foolowing and my
Question is -
should it say ''org.geotools.data.mysql.MySQLDataStoreFactory" when using
ojdbc.jar from oracle ?

Hello! Started for the first time GeoServer, the examples are working, I can see Tasmania. I am looking for a document that can explain what Geoserver and Mapbuilder is trying to do, how they work together - but I cannot seem to find that. Pliiz help. If anyone has experience with oracle and their oracle mapviewer then I would like to replace mapviewer with Geoserver - if possible - and use Mapbuilder to render - show - my picture ( jpg or png ) on a jsp page. I've set up a demo directory for Community Mapbuilder which in linked in with a Java backend and the Geoserver Web Feature Server so all the demos should work without javascript errors. http://bikemap.openearth.com.au:8080/mapbuilder-lib-0.3.1-alpha/demo/ Feel free to try adding features to the Feature Entry demo. Hi group. I'm in desperate need of a button that does a GetFeatureInfo-like thing. Basically, I need to let the user click on the map and return the coordinate of that click to the Javascript environment so I can use that in a (non-spatial) data editing application. Can someone walk we through how to implement this? I promise to develop a documentation afterwards and contribute a set of buttons I've developed based on quickWMS: http://subway.mit.edu/umi/client/mapping/mb_mapviewer.html thanks, Raj |

Hello, and congrats for your work. Sorry if mapbuilder-devel is the wrong list, but it surely seems more popular :) We are a Shiping Mgmt company and we are thinking of adding support for vessel tracking/viewing/positioning on a world map. From what i have seen from Geoserver/mapbuilder installed on a private FreeBSD of mine, i have to say that i am impressed. But, i realized there is a lot of reading from my part (protocols, specs, standards), GIS is a big field on its own, so before i start digging i'd like to ask something in advance, and please tell me if its possible (in the broad sense): We have (cooked) samples from the vessels' GPS systems on periods of 30 mins, fed to the office via uucp. So in a 24 day, we have 48 samples of each vessel. We would like to: - Given the vessels' coordinates, to print all vessels in world wide map (with a little image for each vessel, and color that has a specific meaning for us: blue=ballast, black=laden, arrow-up=discharging, arrow-down=charging, etc....) - Given a vessel or vessels, and a list of coordinates, to print the track for each vessel. - Emulate the actual movement of the vessels (of course with time quantum=30 mins for our case) I understand that Geoserver is Web Service Provider and mapbuilder is a javascript-based map framework. (or am i wrong?) For our case, for instance, it would just need a mapbuilder extension, or i had to hack something or it would be done straight out of the box. All HTML in our site is servlet/jsp generated. Is GIS an overkill for US?? Could we use mapbuilder with a static bitmap instead of using against a full blown GIS server? On the other hand, GIS seems really attractive since the vector maps intergrate a lot of other info, i am sure my boss will be asking in the future. I would be grateful for any hints. -- -Achilleus |

Thanks Carolyn, I've added this fix in mapbuilder, except that it uses the IMG onload event handler version. It is definitely because IE does not support PNG transparancy. Do a google search on IE transparent PNG. You will find many Java Script solutions that use the DXImageTransform.Microsoft.AlphaImageLoader. I have attached my combined version that meets my needs. To use it include the following Java Script at the top of your page: <!--[if gte IE 5.5000]> <script type="text/javascript" src="scripts/pngfix.js"></script> <![endif]--> This assumes that you have a scripts directory under the directory where you page exists. Hi Ben, I think this is because IE doesn't handle PNG transparency correctly. It may be safe to use GIF as the output format. I've recently updated the Sarissa library used in mapbuilder and it is supposed to work in Konqueror and Safari browsers as well (not tested though!). Hi all, First I now use a connector for apache/tomcat. That means that the mapbuilder demos are now _only_ available using the following URLs: http://wms1.ccgis.de/geoserver-1.3-beta3/data/mbdemos/demo/cite/index.html http://wms1.ccgis.de/geoserver-1.3-beta3/data/mbdemos/demo/wfs-t/index.html for the records: FreeBSDs tomcat uses a daemonctl called tomcat50ctl to startup tomcat. This binary is called via /usr/local/etc/rc.d/020.jakarta-tomcat50.sh (kind of Linux /etc/init.d-Skripts) and you cannot add any arguments to it. Great :-)! One workaround is indeed the one Mike Adair adviced. Adding a new tomcat-user to the system, giving this user a shell and setting the variables (CATALINA_OPTS and JAVA_HOME) at system-level, last, starting tomcat with this user. Another way is to set the variables at the top of startup.sh/shutdown.sh and calling these with 020.jakarta-tomcat50.sh instead of tomcat50ctl. Puh. :-) Benjamin |

You should also be able to set: JAVA_OPTS="-Djava.awt.headless=true" at the system level and tomcat will pick up that environment variable at startup. > > > Meanwhile check this: > http://wms1.ccgis.de:8080/geoserver-1.3-beta3/data/mbdemos/dem > o/cite/index.html > http://wms1.ccgis.de:8080/geoserver-1.3-beta3/data/mbdemos/dem > o/wfs-t/index.html > > There is an error with, I suppose a layer called "named places" in > "cite" and both overviews are somekind strange, but over all > it now works! > The cite and tasmania context docs point to /geoserver which is the context name of the webapp. If geoserver is installed as /geoserver-1.3-beta3, then the context docs will have to be changed to match. There may also be /geoserver references in the mapbuilder configuration files. Setting the webapp name as a parameter is something we should look at. Mike Adair |

Cameron, David, I suppose our geoserver was always running fine as wfs requests successfully respond, e.g.: http://wms1.ccgis.de:8080/geoserver-1.3-beta3/wfs?request=GetFeature&typename=topp:tasmania_roads But, I stumbled over this error message: Had an undefined error: Can't connect to X11 window server using ':0.0' as the value of the DISPLAY variable. And thanks to Chris Holmes posting, I knew I had to configure "java.awt.headless=true" somehow. I added CATALINA_OPTS="-Djava.awt.headless=true $CATALINA_OPTS";export CATALINA_OPTS; to startup.sh and what a surprise, the mapbuilder demo gave me pictures!! Sorry for having seen this X11-error so late, but that's because of the huge logfile output of tomcat :-)! The only hitch is, that FreeBSDs tomcat isn't started via startup.sh, instead FreeBSD uses tomcat50ctl which is called via a start skript in /usr/local/etc/rc.d (kind of Linux /etc/init.d) and this way I don't know a way to supply CATALINA_OPTS! Well, I don't want to bother you with this, but maybe you have an idea. Meanwhile check this: http://wms1.ccgis.de:8080/geoserver-1.3-beta3/data/mbdemos/demo/cite/index.html http://wms1.ccgis.de:8080/geoserver-1.3-beta3/data/mbdemos/demo/wfs-t/index.html There is an error with, I suppose a layer called "named places" in "cite" and both overviews are somekind strange, but over all it now works! I'm trying to get this "headless thing" running properly on FreeBSD, so please excuse breaks! Also I'd like to use the apache connector, so 8080 will change to standard port 80, definitely, shortly. :-) I wouldn't like to use tomcat 5.5, as java 1.5 is required or at least configuration work would be necessary and I don't really want to change my running 1.4er. But I had hope, because Cameron is using tomcat 5.0, too. For the record, I had no file permissions problems! FreeBSDs installed tomcat sets these correctly or at least sufficiant, I'm quite sure. dcmms seems to be a postgis database referenced in geoserver-1.3-beta3/WEB-INF/catalog.xml. But I don't know if a geoserver demo requires this database. Ben |

I installed tomcat 5.5.9 and am running geoserver in it. 1. if you get an error about supporting image/png - then you need to install JAI. http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOS/How+to+Download+and+Install+Geoserver 2. I'm unable to reproduce this error. How did you cause it? I noticed you where using tomcat 5.0.30 - you might want to consider upgrading to a later version. >java.lang.IllegalStateException: getOutputStream() has already been called for this response >org.apache.coyote.tomcat5.CoyoteResponse.getWriter(CoyoteResponse.java:600) >org.apache.coyote.tomcat5.CoyoteResponseFacade.getWriter(CoyoteResponseFacade.java:164) >org.vfny.geoserver.servlets.AbstractService.send(AbstractService.java:666) >... Cameron, I attached a gzip compressed stdout.log from tomcat. This seems to be the only log-file where something is logged on requesting mapbuilder. You see tomcat restart logged and then the geoserver/mapbuilder staff, in this case the first request on opening the URL ...mapbuilder/demo/wfs-t/. First striking message is on initializing geoserver and something with "No such file or directory", what always could be a problem. log4j:WARN No appenders could be found for logger (org.apache.commons.beanutils.ConvertUtils). log4j:WARN Please initialize the log4j system properly. 24.04.2005 16:47:52 java.util.prefs.FileSystemPreferences$2 run WARNUNG: Couldn't create user preferences directory. User preferences are unusable. 24.04.2005 16:47:52 java.util.prefs.FileSystemPreferences$2 run WARNUNG: java.io.IOException: No such file or directory Next striking has something to do with a missing .prj-thing and repeats again and again, also together while accessing the demo shapes! @2132 [WARNUNG] org.geotools.data.shapefile.ShapefileDataStore - projection (.prj) for shapefile not available ^@2660 [WARNUNG] org.geotools.data.shapefile.ShapefileDataStore - projection (.prj) for shapefile not available Using UMN-MapServer, a missing projection entry would cause a failing layer, so...maybe that's why! At the end of the logfile you'll the the following: Had an undefined error: Can't connect to X11 window server using ':0.0' as the value of the DISPLAY va riable. org.vfny.geoserver.servlets.AbstractService - Had an undefined error: null Any ideas? Sorry, didn't see the typo. I've downloaded your geoserver/mapbuilder copies and installed via tomcat-manager web frontend. I'm sorry to say, that even now it's the same error (blabla..."null"...). Fresh FreeBSD 5.3, which never saw geoserver/mapbuilder things before I installed yours. I suppose that it'll be the same on our wms1 (FreeBSD 4.11) with your copies of geoserver/mapbuilder. What versions of jdk and tomcat are you using? Are you using Linux? Which distro? I think we have to have a close look at the log-files. I'll try to find a linux box where I can install all these components. Stucked for now. Ben > >> >> I saw at the end of the geoserver startup page "Mapbuilder Demo" with >> Tasmania and CITE. One thing that it could be is that for the Tasmania wfs-t demo, geoserver WMS requires a STYLE param which wasn't included in the context doc. I've just added that to the mapbuilder demo/wfs-t/tasmania.xml and it works correctly now from my local installation of geoserver. The Mapbuilder demos now provide a "Loading" message while the demos are loading. We don't know of any bugs that need to be fixed in the simple WMS client and will probably set the status as "Stable - ready for production" in the release. There are a few fixes with the other demos and all demos should work when installed inside a Java Servlet Engine (like Tomcat). Demos are available at: http://mapbuilder.sourceforge.net/?q=taxonomy/term/5 Feedback is welcome. Cameron Shorter Open Source Developer http://mapbuilder.sourceforge.net |

I've noticed that we have been getting more user related issues and questions raised on the developer email list. So, to prevent users from being swamped with developer specific emails, I've set up a user email list. See http://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=35246 to subscribe/unsubscribe from the various mapbuilder email lists. |
