#5 Username Invalid, must start with a letter......

Dear Mr Durbin:

Whatever the username and pass I type gives this message always:

"Username Invalid, must start with a letter and be between 3 and 12 letters long".

please help, so I havent tried yet always gives that message so I cant start up
chmod for mahc is 777 and cronjobs ok
the path is for one subdomain, .../public_html/chat/mahc/
