I run a blog aggregation site. Our host has repeatedly
suspended a script we run that uses magpie to update
the feeds, citing excessive CPU utilization. It is
consuming up to 60% of the CPU on some occassions.
Using Magpie 0.71
We do aggregate a lot of blogs (180), but we use a
process that minimizes the updates so that we are only
ever asking magpie to process a maximum of 5 feeds once
every 5 minutes. I can't really understand why that
would take up so much CPU. It makes me wonder if there
is a bug in magpie or the version of PHP we are
running. I've read about bugs in the socket functions
and fopen functions in some versions of PHP.
Has anyone experienced this, got any suggestions for
optimizing etc. Does 5 feeds every 5 mins really sound
like a lot?
