I seem to be missing something very basic here and I can't figure out what it is. I am going to explain this so there is nothing assumed. So sorry for the dumbed down approach. I have removed the Madwifi driver (make uninstall) and did a make clean then powered down. I inserted a Netgear WPN311 (on the compatibility list) and powered up Redhat Enterprise edition 4. It asked me to configure (at boot) and I said yes and gave it the address 192.168.1.200 and netmask 255.255.255.0 all the rest was blank. Once booted I logged in as root. Under System settings I deactivated my eth0 and activated wifi0. All the rest of the settings indicate the static ip mentioned above. I then did a make, then a make install. All went well. Then I did the following commands on a console: modprobe ath_pci wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode adhoc iwconfig ath0 essid "dave" ifconfig ath0 up After a short while my Windows machine shows it aquiring network address and then shows it connected. I can do a wlanconfig ath0 list and see the MAC addresses of the other devices out there including my Windows machine. When I do a ping to the Windows machine (also in adhoc mode with ssid of "dave") I get "host unreachable" and when I try to ping my device from my Windows box I get "host unreachable". I know this should be brain-dead easy for someone out there. What am I missing? desperate! dave |
