Beacons are always sent at the "lowest basic rate". This could mean 2Mbps DSSS, depending on your setup. Its actually possible to decode a 'nearby' (high RSSI) beacon on an adjacent channel. This is why the channel number is part of the beacon. So perhaps madwifi should 'filter' what it reads while scanning.
