Bad form replying to yourself, but I have made some progress
(still no networking though)

I don't know what I did (I hate when that happens) but iwlist scan works, and 
I found out I typoed on the new access point configuration.

Anyway, both lights are blinking in tandem now which on windows indicates 
everything is synced and ready, but there's no traffic.  tx power is showing 
as off - or 0dBm  if I set txpower auto.

This sounds horribly like the txpower issue IBM builtin users are having but 
I'm using a standalone cardbus card.
