I had a wired system at work that would be totally quiescent when I
arrived in the morning.
I bought the same hardware for home, and put in an SMCWPIC-G card
(lspci reports it as Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5005G 802.11abg)
and the machine is never quiet. The fan hums along all the time and
I always assumed that this was down to the wifi card being 'active'.
I've just installed 'bungmeter' from http://grecni.com/bungmeter/
and run it against both the wifi0 and ath0 interfaces. I was surprised
to see that wifi0 has a steady input chatter of about 2.5kb/s even if
there is no traffic on ath0.
So, dumb question time: Is there some way that I can filter this out,
or is this really what is already happening between wifi0 and ath0 ?
I would quite like to make my machine quieter when not being used.
[Running 'iwlist scan ath0' shows mine and 7 neighbours' wifi networks]
