Oddly, I've found that "ifdown ath0" leaves the little green antenna light
on on my R40. I don't much care, really, but thought it worth reporting.

Same here with my Atheros 5212 mini-pci type 3B card in my laptop.
The external hardware Wi/Fi on/off switch and "ifconfig ath0 down"
leaves the Wi/Fi card on the laptop on. Worse yet, since the
Atheros draws approx. 2 Watts of power, my laptop battery life is
noticable shorter even when it is disabled.
I assumed that is a hardware issue, likely due to the fact that
I removed the original Centrino and transplated the Atheros Wi/Fi
card from a D-link router, and either the hardware On/Off support
on the card was removed in the router version of the Atheros, or
the Wi/Fi on/off support in my laptop hardware & bios will only
work with the original Intel Centrino Wi/Fi card. (My laptop
"JVC-Victor Interlink MP-XP7310" has an Intel motherboard that
may not like the Atheros.)
Does anyone on this list have any experience with laptop Centrino
to Atheros transplating, that would be willing to share their
