I have two Linux boxes 2.6.5 kernel, Aries 5434 cards that create a wireless link between two locations. The link is up but I have about 4-33% packet loss all the time. I also had this problem with the 2.6.0 kernel and the madwifi drivers 20030802 version. NOTE: When I test I have the same kernel and madwifi version on both ends. Old version that shows the same problem on a 2.6.0 kernel: ath_hal 0.9.6.3 ath_pci 0.8.4.3 Beta wlan 0.7.2.0 Beta Currently I am using the latest CVS build as of two weeks ago with kernel 2.6.5: ath_hal 0.9.8.6 ath_pci 0.8.5.4 Beta wlan 0.7.3.1 Beta So I am not sure if it is a version issue or something else. I have seen that other people have reported packet loss too, but no resolution. I have see one case that it turned out to be a channel issue the user changed the channel from 1 to 6 and the problem went away. If someone knows a resolution to this issue please let me know? I believe that most of these problems are caused by a botch I made with the WME checkin. Do you think there will be a solution in the near future? Some way to ifdef out that botch? I bought an Netgear WG311 PCI card in order to use it as an AP. But I experience about 70% packet loss when communicating with my Centrino(Intel PRO/Wireless 2100) laptop. I'm currently thinking about selling the card again, but I'd rather find a solution to get it working properly. If you need more information I'd be happy to help. I also tried a fresh Intel driver together with the ndiswrapper on my notebook. But still 80% packet loss when pinging from the madwifi card to the notebook. Also if I set the madwifi adapter to mode "managed" and scan, it doesn't find the other WLAN in my area, which doesn't hurt me, but it's strange. The Centrino notebook with ndiswrapper, lists it just fine, however. I had a friend comming over with his laptop and we experimmented a little to find out whats wrong. We had these three machines: A: the my Netgear WG311 with madwifi driver, in master mode C: my Centrino laptop(Intel ProWireless 2100 chipset), with Intel driver, linux/ndiswrapper or windows xp, didn't make a difference, in managed mode O: my friends laptop with some Orinoco chipset IIRC, in managed mode All were set to 802.11b, no encryption. We tried to ping in all possible combinations, back and forth. What came out: 1. A and O: works fine in either direction, no packet loss. 2. _from_ C _to_ A or O: works fine, no packet loss 3. _to_ C _from_ A or O: about 80% packet loss Now whats interressting: 4. _to_ C _from_ A or O while at the same time _from_ C _to_ A or O: there where in regular, repeating intervals: about 20 packets without any loss, and a period with heavy packet loss, and again 20 packets without, ... How can that happen?? My conclusions: Indeed it seems to be that my Centrino laptop is the guilty one. However, somehow I can't imagine that it generally should perform that poorly. Can't test it with other APs, though. I'm not so much into the technical details of WLANs, but isn't the AP involved with any transmission somehow? So my guess would be that there is a specific communiaction problem between the Intel chipset/driver(and maybe others) and the madwifi driver? Is this a known issue? Can anyone coomnfirm these observations? Is something in my setup wrong? Any thoughts? |

Any status on the packet loss? I know you had someone testing the problem to determine the issue. Half of the problem was caused by the 5211 misconfiguration. Some portion of the remaining problems are caused by CVS HEAD not doing the right stuff regarding long/short preamble selection for 11g. The WPA branch does do it correctly. You might want to give it a try as that will soon become the main branch that receives fixes and improvements. We're still looking for the other causes of the problem and have made some improvements, but not found a bonafide smoking gun. g Jason Romo wrote: > Any status on the packet loss?
