The issue is something that I have been wondering about as well, since
there already is support for simultaneous STA/AP functionality in madwifi.
According to the FAQ at the virtualwifi page, it says that it queues the
packets and switches between networks, so they can also be on different
channels and even operate on different standards (802.11a/g). So it
wastes always some time when switching from a network from another.
What I was thinking myself (and Steven Ren perhaps as well?) is that is
there any technical reason why a WiFi card couldn't support ad hoc mode
at the same time with station and/or access point mode (not losing
association if a station and so on), if they operate on the same channel?
I think the most flexible solution would be to allow the card to
function in any or all of the 3 modes at the same time, if possible.
