On request I've adjusted a patch that I wrote last year to apply cleanly
for current CVS snapshots.
The description from the old patch (as has been available in patch
=== cut ===
This patch adds a module parameter "ifname" which
allows to alter the interface name prefix during loadtime.
If you have one wlan interface that is based on one of
the chipsets supported by madwifi, and you load the
modules with something like:
your interface will be "atheros0" instead of "ath".
This can be useful for example if you are tied to the
old Cisco VPN client that does not support other
interfaces than "ethX" without patching.

Note: This patch won't be included in the main CVS snapshot. There are
several other (and more standardized) ways to rename a network
interface. Such as:
1.) Using the tool ifrename. Infos about this tool at
2.) Using the tool "ip" (part of iproute2), by calling it
ip l set dev ath0 name atheros1
Infos about this tool at http://developer.osdl.org/dev/iproute2/
Nevertheless some people seem to have a need for this patch :)
The patch has been tested with the most current CVS snapshot, compiles
fine and seemed to work in a quick test on one of my systems.
