I know.  I actually want to keep it possible to run "make" in
subdirectories.  But I guess the full build should be cleaned up first,
and that's what I'm doing.  Many old tricks are no longer needed.

Committed.  And it's working.  At least scanning on x86_64 is working.

I've enabled 32-bit SPARC support, but I know very little about the new
MIPS architectures to distinguish them reliably, so this left to the
exercise of the MIPS people.
