My sarge Debian does not have a z25_... file, not any wifi or ath in any file in the /etc/udev/*.

That is my question, though. If you are using madwifi-ng, what does the wlanconfig create (et cetera) give you? For me, it said ioctl does not exist, or some such thing. ifconfig showed an ath0 (as does yours) and dmesg showed wifi0 (as does yours). If the wlanconfig isn't working, try the solution that worked for me: In /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persiste
nt-net.rules, uncomment the lines pertaining to ath0. Reboot and all should be well, providing that this is the problem.
