Yeah, I believe I have to make modifications in the HAL to change the PLL and use narrower bands.

You can use iwconfig athx channel x or iwconfig athx freq x.xxG to specify the channel/freq you want to use. But I don't think you can channel the bandwidth size in unmodified madwifi.
