if you have some text on a document and choose 'search and replace'.
tick the option to use regular expressions and use ^ as the expression to match and put anything as the replacement character, press replace and the program crashes..

If you perform multiple regular expression searches for ^. you will match every character in the file, one by one.
Searching for ^a (for example) will work as expected, matching any instances of 'a' at the start of a line and not matching other instances of 'a' in the file.
