The omnigroup do this, and have posted some statistics of their  
users. take this with as much salt as you need, our users may show a  
very different distribution. http://update.omnigroup.com/

I think the OmniWebFramework (OWF) can be used for this, but I'm not  
sure about that. Another question is whether you want to use that  
code, and whether it is easier to use curl or similar.
