I have supposed that the use of margins was rather rare, so there was no need to save that setting. So, I chose not to put it in the preferences, since from this point of view it would have no meaning, and the user would forgot it (leading to unexpected behaviour) By the way, the solution of a floating palette was somewhat natural : if you need it, display it, and tune it.
