I guess I'd want the settings to stick; i.e., be a preference and  
then be able to override that using the pallet.

Also, what processing steps are you using? Are you using the shipout  
of the tight box or forcing the bounding box after you create the pdf  
file? Since there should only be a snippet of text or a single  
(possibly multi-line displayed) equation you might try just creating  
the regular pdf and running that through pdfcrop. Did we go through  
this once before?
