I agree on the beauty of opensource. However, I tried several kernels and the farest I got was launching elilo with rEFIt and then, when it looked like it was giving control to the kernel the screen froze. I didn't see any output from the kernel so I believe it was some incompatibility between the kernel and the firmware. I tried several times with different options and I stopped wondering whether that was even possible. BTW, I also tried to boot from usb and cdrom and I couldn't, elilo was never found neither by rEFIt or Apple firmware. Has anybody tried and succeed running linux on an intel xserve natively? It used efi, and elilo to boot up. IIRC. Alternatively, you can build a bootable efi/elilo linux usbkey/cdrom by yourself. That's part of the beauty of opensource, you have all the code/tools needed to do it by yourself, it just takes: time, pacience and willpower.
