It won't be backported to Fedora Core 5, mostly due to the short (6 month) cycle that Fedora is currently on. However, 6 is going to be out fairly soon, so there really shouldn't be any reason to stick with 5. I think 6 should have a whole bunch of improvements over 5. I don't have any experience with the iMacs, although I wish I could afford to buy another computer right now :). I do have experience with the MBP. From research that I've done before buying, I think the MBP is very comparable to PCs with similar specs. In my opinion the nice hardware (nicely built/ designed) and the inclusion of OS X, compensates for whatever tiny price difference there might be. This is of course a subjective judgement. I'm also a student, so I count in the $200 student discount. As for the video card, if I'm not mistaken the binary driver for the x1600 (on the Mac Book Pros, again not sure what the iMacs use) card is out (someone correct me if I'm wrong). So you can have accelerated video, however you will have to install it seperately from the distribution. I haven't yet installed Linux on it, so I don't know how much trouble that actually takes, but I imagine that reading through the archives of this mailing list will probably give you a good idea.
