short battery-time; yes, a bit.
With a full charged battery the estimated remaining time is 2h13m.
I have not tried/measured the effective time.

loud fans: no (unless I recompile a kernel :-)
The fan speed is ~1000

I use the Debian Etch kernel but I installed the modules appleir,
applesmc and appletouch as external modules (compiled outside of the
kernel).
