Back in the day I sponsored a Conway's Life contest for the Classic PowerPC Macintosh. I promised to award the winner a bottle of beer from the Front Street Pub, a microbrewery in Santa Cruz. Well some German guy implemented it all in PowerPC assembly code that used bit-parallelism to operate on 32 cells simultanously. He was clearly the winner - he beat the pants off everyone else who entered. I *still* haven't figured out how his code worked. Woe was me and woe was him, I was not permitted to send him his bottle of beer!
