stock grub that comes with Red Hat EL 5

Stock RHEL 5.4 - 2.6.18-164.el5

Yes.

I've not had any problems with the various Red Hat kernels since early 
in RHEL 5.  I had a heck of a time getting the initial install to boot, 
hence the kernel options listed above.
