You might be able to get it to work by putting your Linux kernel and
initrd on your internal drive, but specifying the partition on your
USB drive as your root filesystem.

That worked for me a while back to boot in iBook off a FireWire drive,
as yaboot doesn't support SBP2 booting.

I do realize this won't help you much if you really do need to use
your stick as a rescue system. :-D
