Hi Geoffrey, I must admit I didn't follow the whole of your story. But, why do you exactly stick to 2.6.24 when more recent kernel versions are available. I belief that since 2.6.28 no further patches are required. At least that's what I experienced on my macmini and mbp. However, if you find a kernel-config of your actual system you can always try a "make oldconfig" first and than, as you are just trying to get your sound right, set the appropriate flags in the Intel-HDA section. Furthermore, DO NOT FORGET to keep a copy of your old kernel linked in your grub/lilo config. I use to compile my kernels myself since a long time, and belief me, Murphy’s Law and kernel compiling are closely related. Hope this helps, and don't hesitate to ask!
