Not sure about the MacBook, but my MBP 4,1 works as long as I fiddle
all the driver settings properly. Basically:
/etc/modprobe.d/options:options snd_hda_intel model=mbp3
Then unmute Mic and MicBoost and maximize level, and make sure Mic is
input source (look around alsamixer).
Note: My mic is in the left speaker - sort of where the power button
isn't... ;-)
