On this gentoo howto they not only recommend using ATI's powerplay but
actually give some output that allegedly comes from running it:
I presume this is a reference to the MBP since the MB does not have an
ATI card. When I run 'aticonfig --lsp' on my MBP C2D however I get:
Error: POWERplay is not supported on your hardware.
I'm doing everything at 32 bits - my system and the ati driver. Has
anyone managed to get powerplay to work? This might go a long way
towards saving battery life.
Also, my fan seems to constantly whir in the background (like now
;->). I have applesmc installed but have left the fan's on automatic
so far. I haven't figured out what units the temperatures
temperature_0-6 are in so I don't know if the fan's should be coming
on but it seems to me that they come on too quickly in Linux. In OS X
the processor temperature can get very high before the fan's are
raised over 2000 rpms. Does anyone have a way to get more reasonable
fan speeds - particularly for a C2D machine that heats up less?
