I'm working on cleaning up various AppleTV issues. I'm running the mythic-beasts boot method under a 2.6.21.5 kernel with the AppleTV and MacTel patches. The target is a standalone MythTV frontend able to handle both SD and HD content. So far things are looking good, with nvidia xvmc hardware decode, the AppleTV platform as sufficient power to decode 1080i with 30 percent idle left over. There are some issues that cause problems so the solution is not complete. 1) The network interface gets a large amount of overrun errors when viewing HD content, I've tracked this down to the AppleTV cpu running about 90 percent of the time in C3 state even with cpu at 70 percent. In C3 state, the response to interrupts is about 50 times longer which results in network overrun errors. If I disable processor.ko (acpi processor control), then I don't get network errors. Naturally, some would say just run it this way but that's a hack and I want to understand why it's sticking in C3 and never going to C1, then fix the problem. The ability to idle down in power when truly idle is important in this application. From what I gather, most cpu power state problems are with the inability to get to C3 for laptop battery life. This is the reverse, I'm stuck in C3 with 10 percent usage in C2. 2) The pci-express root port/nvidia are running at X2 link width. Under the AppleTV OSX, this link width is X16. So somehow the pci-express link width gets limited to 2X width under linux but not under OSX. Naturally this link width is important in mpeg2 decode application especially when decoding HD content. My suspicion is that this is somehow also related to being stuck in C3 power state. The link width negotiation is handled by the two chipsets and it does not see that the cpu is involved but maybe C3 power state also extends to the chips sets. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Scott |

Hello!
On the last four month I tried to improve the appletouch driver.
This is the first version of my new driver.
The driver is developed for Linux kernel 2.6.21 or newer.
I tried to implement a palm detection, make the driver more robust and
add correct suspend (the PowerTop problem).
First: If you want to use the touchpad, use the newest X11 Synaptics
driver from GIT. The version 0.14.6 is NOT new enough!
To improve the palm detection, I implemented for testing a little
helper daemon (appletouchd.c), which will report pressed keys
to the driver and ignore touches then. Additionally I tried with this
daemon to enable the Ctrl modifier key to emulate the second touchpad
button, but it does not work correctly.
Alternatively you can use the "syndaemon" helper.
I would like to implement the reporting of keys to the driver in
kernel space, but I have no clue how to do this.
This version has many debug outputs, which you can enable if you
want. Feel free to play with the driver and give some feedback.
Don't expect the driver to be full usable. I have to clean it up
and optimize some parts...
Known problems:
- After two finger scrolling with one finger fixed and the other
used for scrolling, the pointer jumps some pixels.
- When using the helper daemon, pressing the Ctrl key together with
the touchpad button, it well generate a second button event, but
in some way the keyboard will block it. You can see it via evtest,
but it never reaches the GUI...
Regards
Sven

+The appletouch devices found in the Intel Macs (and possibly some later PPC ones?) send a constant stream of packets after the first touch. This results in the kernel waking up around once every couple of milliseconds to process them, making it almost impossible to spend any significant period of time in C3 state on a dynamic HZ kernel. Sending the mode initialisation code makes the device shut up until it's touched again. This patch does so after receiving 10 packets with no interesting content.

see http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/5/13/167
However I realized that a freshly loaded appletouch driver does not need
the != 20 check... not sure what changes over time. but the symptom
"Moving the touchpad sends a false
press after every reinitialisation, or (approximately) every time the
pointer is moved."
really appears... without this check.
I could however not find any difference in the way initialization is
done between Matthew's and the original appletouch version. So I agree
with Matthew - it is probably a bug even in the original driver.

The attached patch tries to resolve the 'appletouch runs amok' problem,
which accured *for me* after using the mbp for a couple of hours/days
with the power-saving [PATCH] Make appletouch shut up when it has
nothing to say from Matthew Garrett.
I am using it for 3 days now without ever running in trouble. So I think
it is ready for wider testing.
@Matthew, this patch differs only in also reporting the key/input_sync
when the idlecount is reached:
if (dev->idlecount == 10) {
+ if (dev->data[dev->datalen-1] != 20)
+ input_report_key(dev->input, BTN_LEFT,
+ !!dev->data[dev->datalen - 1]);
+
+ input_sync(dev->input);
schedule_work (&dev->work);
goto exit;

initial probs - video - for some reason the output is garbled in X (with prop. drivers), if the depth is set to higher than 16 bit then there is a crash when killing X or going to text mode .. X also thinks that there is twice as much ram (512 insted of 256) .. i tried to fix that using the VideoRam directive in x but there is no diff ... I also tried the latest driver and one of the legacy driver packages (the latter did not work at all) ... ethernet and sound seemed to work fine along with usb and firewire (2.6.22 , mactel patched) . Video worx ok with the nv drivers ... the box seems to run fairly hot but the fans are staying quiet ... stan |

I wonder if there is a kernel config that I am missing. When I use 2.6.21.1-mactel all the sensor information showed up. Now that I am using 2.6.22-rc5 I don't get any sensor information out of it. I just get: crazyharry prices # sensors coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter temp1: +59 C (high = +100 C) coretemp-isa-0001 Adapter: ISA adapter temp1: +58 C (high = +100 C) applesmc-isa-0300 Adapter: ISA adapter crazyharry prices # I am on a MBP 2,2. I am running Gentoo AMD64 2007.1. I can get you my kernel config if you want, but as you can see applesmc is showing up in the sensors, it just shows no sensors on it. I have applesmc loaded as a module.
