Mmmh... now this makes a lot of sense! The full featured protocol (which sends 4 instead of 3 bytes, the 4th being the scroll data) is called "report protocol". >> Does the HID protocol have support for the scroll-wheel? > > Yes, but probably not the HIDBP. Exactly! > Now the question: > > How do I switch my bluetooth mouse to full HID mode? Ehh! That's the hard part. I don't think you can from userland. I found in the HID specs (from usb.org) that the driver should issue a "change protocol" to put the device into report-protocol mode. However, in net/bluetooth/core.c there is if (session->input) { hidp_send_ctrl_message(session, HIDP_TRANS_SET_PROTOCOL | HIDP_PROTO_BOOT, NULL, 0); session->flags |= (1 << HIDP_BOOT_PROTOCOL_MODE); session->leds = 0xff; hidp_input_event(session->input, EV_LED, 0, 0); } which seems to always choose the boot protocol for the device and never reset it! I think we should play around with that piece of code... > >> root@applecar:~# hidd --show >> 00:12:A1:60:8A:33 Bluetooth HID Boot Protocol Device [0a5c:0001] connected > [boot-protocol] > > I think this means it's will in HIDBP mode. Ok, the HIDBP (HID Boot-Protocol) is very basic...
I found this:
There are two options for using a USB mouse or a USB keyboard - the standalone
Boot Protocol (HIDBP) way and the full featured HID driver way. The Boot
Protocol way is generally inferior, and this document describes the full
featured way. The Boot Protocol way may be appropriate for embedded systems
and other systems with resource constraints and no real need for the full
keyboard and mouse capabilities.
I think now I got the right idea! I mixed HID / HIDBP / HCI up...

Yes, but probably not the HIDBP.
Now the question:
How do I switch my bluetooth mouse to full HID mode?
> root@applecar:~# hidd --show
> 00:12:A1:60:8A:33 Bluetooth HID Boot Protocol Device [0a5c:0001] connected
[boot-protocol]
I think this means it's will in HIDBP mode. Maybe I'm wrong?!
My "USB HIDBP Mouse" option in the kernel is turned off.

Ok, I understand.

Ok. But as I understand HID is very basic. If you want to use all features of
a device, you have to use the devices "own" protocol.
(To query the battery status for instance).
What does the 'boot-protocol' mean, what are the other protocol types?
If I switch a device from HID mode to HCI, does the device give the plain USB
data?
Does the HID protocol have support for the scroll-wheel?

If you look a the source-code of 'hid2hci' you will see the following:
{ HCI, 0x05ac, 0x1000, switch_hidproxy },
{ HID, 0x05ac, 0x8203, switch_hidproxy },
{ HID, 0x05ac, 0x8204, switch_hidproxy }, /* Apple Mac mini */
{ HID, 0x05ac, 0x8207, switch_hidproxy }, /* Apple Power Mac G5 */
It seems, that you can switch (at least on the upper Macs) between the HID and
HIC mode. What is this for, when you do not need to switch?

I do not have a dongle neither.

For logitech those are some special HID specific ioctls.

Are you sure? How do you query the battery status in HID mode?
At least (your) MightyMouse has this feature.

Ok, same idea I had (after reading this mail). I will try these!
I think the HID mouse will use this entry in my xorg.conf:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
EndSection
There is a ZAxisMapping set and on a normal USB mouse (connected in parallel)
it works perfectly!
I will play with that tonight!
Thanks for your exhaustive answers!

You sound a little confused (okay, the architecture is not exactly well documented). HCI is the low-level bluetooth device. I wouldn't say it's even a protocol. It's rather the hardware interface. It controls the immediate BT hardware stuff. The hcitool can issue most HCI commands to such a device. Bluetooth supports several transport layers: UART, RS232 and USB. For us only USB is relevant. See hciconfig. HID is a USB device class and as such a Bluetooth "profile". All mice and keyboards use that. hid2hci is only used for dongles. Some Logitec mice for instance come with a cradle. The cradle is connected to an USB port in your PC and has a bluetooth device built-in. Or you may have a Bluetooth USB stick, because your laptop comes with no Bluetooth onboard. Both are dongles. The mouse so speaks with the dongle only. In such a setup the dongle by default acts as a (USB) HID device: i.e. it transparently forwards the mouse data as if the mouse was directly connected to the USB port. If in such a setup you want to configure the pairing for instance, you must switch the dongle to HCI mode. So the OS sees the Bluetooth device (connected over USB). That's what hid2hci is for. My problem is: The Scroll-wheel does not work.
How do I switch it to HCI mode??
What Mac to you own?
What are the IDs (Vendor/Device) of your bluetooth device=

Hello!
I'm owning a MacBook Pro (C2D) and are playing with bluetooth.
Has anybody success using a bluetooth mouse with using the HID mode?
I tried to use the hid2hci tool, but I got only
"No devices in HID mode found" or "No devices in HCI mode found"
I even tried to patch the tool (adding the Apple IDs 0x05ac/0x8205), but I'm
only get error messages. I think this patching was wrong....
root@applecar:/home/anders/MacBookPro/bluetooth/bluez-utils-3.9/tools#
./hid2hci -1
Switching device 05ac:8205 to HID mode failed (Invalid or incomplete multibyte
or wide character)
root@applecar:/home/anders/MacBookPro/bluetooth/bluez-utils-3.9/tools#
./hid2hci -0
Switching device 05ac:1000 to HCI mode failed (Invalid or incomplete multibyte
or wide character)
Has anybody more success??
Any hints?
Regards

I don't know about others, but what is different between my config and
yours is that I compiles PATA support into the "ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL
support" (CONFIG_IDE=y) and not in the "Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel
ATA (experimental) drivers" (where I have only my STATA driver). I
don't know if this makes any difference, but fact is my 2.6.19 kernel
boots just fine. I am not sure what else you do different (and is
pertinent to the matter at hand), but if I discover something else you
will be the first to know.
By the way (and keeping in line with the subject), eliminating the sbs
module from the kernel makes some difference, but I still loose
battery information over time--happened last night actually, after
some 10-12 hours of uptime.
Cheers,

If it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be; but as
it isn't, it ain't. That's logic.

Hey, thanks, I found a potentially significant issue, in that you do
not have sbs (the Smart Battery System) ACPI module in your kernel. I
got rid of it, and the battery information appeared on reboot. In
other words, the Macbook (Pro? C2D?) battery is not a SBS battery
(contrary to what I read I forgot where). It could be that the sbs
module interferes somehow with the rest of the battery ACPI system and
causes all the trouble. But then I cannot be sure of this until some
time passes. It looks nonetheless promising.

Works well for me (this is what I am using), though I am not sure why
it does not for you.

There are some mactel-patches that are missing from the 2.2.20 series
(most notable the ir.patch) but I did not get to check the touchpad--
essentially I stopped testing 2.6.20 when I discovered that
ati-drivers-8.30.3 will not build under it (anything above 8.30.3
causes a reboot upon wakeup on my machine, I would be interested in
knowing whether anybody else has managed to make it work).
Anyway, thanks for the config, if you do not hear from me in the next
couple of days or so it means that the sbs thing fixes the battery
issue. ;-)
Cheers,
Stefan

With 2.6.20 we have the KVM virtual machine. Did anybody try running OS-X as a guest OS? An cool feature would be that we could more easily reverse engineer how OS-X is communicating with the SMC module! Interrupt mode, yet unknown sensors, sleep mode etc. Anybody that has the skills to do that? Ortwin |

Agreed.

It does not seem to work, though maybe I am doing something wrong. I
meant to test further but I did not get to it.

You must be doing something right that I have missed. What
kernel/mactel patches combination are you using? Can I take a peek at
your kernel config?

Seems to be the case here too.

Agreed once more. Thanks.

On the macbook pro that would work, but for the macbook the only alternative is an usb stick. this is more than unhandy. cu Edgar (gimli) Hucek Stefan Bruda schrieb: > At 08:09 -0600 on 2007-2-6 Scott L. Unfortunately the Wlan card is not yet supported by the madwifi-ng
HAL. There is one person in charge of this and nobody knows when will
he get to it. It could be a matter of months until this chip gets
into the madwifi HAL.
So what I did in the meantime is to purchase a dirt cheap Dell
Wireless 1390 Expresscard/34 off eBay (currently selling for under USD
45 all inclussive, though I got it cheaper). This uses the Broadcom
chip which is supported by both in-kernel modules and ndiswrappers.
Except for a protruding thing that has Dell written on it, everything
is fine and I can thus afford the wait.

Yeah, this is what I thought. Thanks for the confirmation.

Forgot to mention, wireless LAN works only with ndiswrapper and 32 bits windows drivers under a 32 bits system ATM. 2007/2/6, Guillaume Pujol <gui...@gm...>: > Hi, > > I have been running Gentoo 64 bits for 1 month on my MacBookPro C2D. Hi, I have been running Gentoo 64 bits for 1 month on my MacBookPro C2D. I switched to Gentoo 32 bits more than 1 month ago. This switch did NOT change anything to these problems: - no powerplay (really annoying) - no wakeup with ati-drivers >= 30.3 - dvi-out works on 32 bit, but I didn't test it when running 64bits - my battery reporting seems reliable, but I didn't noticed any problem under 64 bits - wakeup works 95% of the time. So I think that you can safely stay 64 bits. Regards, |

Do you have the wireless lan working in 64bit? That is the only reason I am not running 64bit. I have all of the same issues in 32bit mode, although I have never used the DVI-I.
