Hi, I beleive your project with a few enhancements and modifications could be a tool to help or atleast give a chance for victims to 'try' find their stolen devices.
I had an experience where my ipod was pick-pocketed on a bus. I could have spotted the person as i know my device's mac address and since that person probably commutes on the same bus as i do.. If only i had a way to spot it, since i cannot be certain as there are many others with the same device too. Well there could have been and maybe still could be a chance..
Trial scenario:
Using the MacFinder with a laptop/netbook, by entering the known mac address of the device, the program can continuously scan the area via wifi looking to detect or attempt to make a connection with only that device. Apon finding the device the program can notify the user by a msg/sound, and if possible indicate the proximity and maybe also a rough location. This would confirm the device is near by thus allowing the victim to take the appropriate action.
