I've been using 2.7d3 for maybe over a year now, and it seems pretty stable. I think that there have been some pretty useful modifications to the CVS tree since then, and there are a couple more un-joined patches, but the easiest thing is probably to download 2.7d3. I think that 2.5 has a moderately serious bug caused by the switch to daylight savings time (all your files are MRO'd), but that might be a previous version.
