Yes, that's a requirement, the MacOS partition cannot be mounted in
Linux at the same time as it's beeing booted by MOL.

You should not need a Boot-ROM on newer MacOS versions (8.6+) since
the Boot-ROM is stored in the System folder of the MacOS version
you're trying to boot.
