Dear all, we are in the preparation phase for the GSoC program. 1. MENTORS Right now, we need to form a team of mentors. a) We need primary mentors who can take care of students during the summer. b) We need backup mentors in case primary mentors are temporarily absent. Please reply to this email if you would be able to support the program with mentorship or know somebody who could be a mentor. 2. MORE IDEAS We need more ideas on the idea page. It would be good if we can give students some choices. Prospectus students should also add their ideas here, please: http://wiki.lxde.org/en/Google_Summer_of_Code_2010 . There is also an older page of LXDE to dos. Maybe you can get some ideas here as well: http://wiki.lxde.org/en/LXDE_To_Do 3. STUDENT APPLICATIONS Who is interested to apply as a student for LXDE? It would be a good idea to start discussing ideas on this list. Personally, it would be great if we could also support contributors, who have been already active in the LXDE community. 4. ALLOCATION OF STUDENT SLOTS Students slots will be allocated by Google according to the percentage of all applications to all projects in GSoC. This means the more applications we get, the more choice we have to take students in and the more students we can actually take in. I am looking forward to your replies. All the best, Mario |

Since I don't have much time this summer due to my bachelor thesis I normally wouldn't apply. But if the Mentors are choosing the students(?) I could just apply to increase perceantage. I hope to apply as a student. I will hopefully be able to work a little more on lxde after my round of mid-term exams tomorrow. I would love to discuss ideas for what to do for SoC. Hi Shae, sounds good. Please feel free to discuss project proposals with the devs/contributors on the channel or mailing list. Also, please add ideas to the wiki: http://wiki.lxde.org/en/Google_Summer_of_Code_2010 Do you have suggestions who could be a good mentor for a potential project with you? I continue to think one of the best uses of a summer student would be to take a look at LXDE as if coming into it fresh, and see what getting-started and ongoing management tools are expected. This is a little more than coding feverishly. You do not want to end up with a bloated thing that replicates everything available in GNOME or KDE. This is part of what in my view has gone wrong with Xfce in its latest release. If people want the comforts of GNOME or KDE, they should run GNOME or KDE. You want sufficient finesse to give people what they need, such as a way to configure their input devices, without overdesign. It would require getting familiar with what's available in the competitive DEs and making intelligent choices. One possible output of that would be a configuration application that pulls together the existing several tools into a single one that probably has buttons you can drill down into to set different things. Then in each area, you design a lightweight yet sufficient parameter setting application. And a getting started HOWTO that takes care of answering most of the questions a new user would have about how to do things. The other observation I would make is that putting ten coders on a project produces far more code than we would want in LXDE. At some point soon, LXDE will be sufficiently fleshed out to be called "done" in the sense that adding things to it erodes the lightness in an undesirable way. We have also talked about redoing the internals of GPicView on top of the ImageView library same as Viewnior uses, which would be a nice little project for someone, but might be too easy to challenge someone for an entire summer. Hi Marty, good points. Do you have resources to get involved into GSoC? Could you be a mentor? You do not want to end up with a bloated thing that replicates everything available in GNOME or KDE. This is part of what in my view has gone wrong with Xfce in its latest release. If people want the comforts of GNOME or KDE, they should run GNOME or KDE. As you know, I already wrote here about his desire to participate in the development of LXDE project in Rusk Google Summer of Code, as well as after it. I have the following ideas which I would like to implement: Ideas concerning the application image viewer GPicView: 1) Support for printing image 2) Support for gif animation 3) Reflection on a vertical, horizontal 4) Autohide panel LXDE panel: 1) Integrate gnome-applets in LXDE panel 2) LXDE-panel autohide (At the moment neznayu have such a function or not I didnt find it) 3) Some usefull plugins (weather plugin, currency rate and etc...) Also I liked the job from the wiki: >Integrate Twitter, Facebook etc. into an LXLauncher Dashboard tab. implementations of these ideas, I would like to activities in the summer, the project Google Summer of Code. Now, I hope to convince you that I come to these jobs. Thank you. |

My comments on the GPicView: 1) This is okay 2) We have had this for almost a year. 3) Possibly, it might fall outside "lightweight", but not too far given we have rotation 4) We have manual hiding in the latest release 5) No work should be done on feature enhancements until the conversion to ImageView is checked in My comments on the LXPanel: 1) I definitely oppose this. It puts us at the mercy of tracking their communication mechanism with limited resources to react to any changes they may make in the future. Once we release this, people will have an expectation that it will keep working. 2) We have this. I have manual hide working also but waiting on a feature release to include it. 3) I definitely oppose this. We have only in-process plugins at the moment and any elaborate plugin has the definite potential to crash the entire panel. These suggestions also seriously violate, in my opinion, "lightweight", although I know at least some of them have been suggested by other users. However, we already decided to shift to GtkImageView library, which provides a lightweight and robust image viewing widget, and this requires some refactor. So new features should be added after this has been done. Porting to GtkImageView lib can be another SoC item. > 2) Support for gif animation We already have this since long time ago. > 3) Reflection on a vertical, horizontal We already have this since long time ago. > 4) Autohide panel We already have this since long time ago. > LXDE panel: > 1) Integrate gnome-applets in LXDE panel No, and never. If you need gnome-applets, just use gnome-panel. That's what gnome-panel is designed for and it does it well. If you freqently find that you need gnome-applets, that means gnome-panel is more suitable than lxpanel for you. So just use it. Don't refuse to use gnome applications just for political reasons. They still make good software and just the direction is different from ours. > 2) LXDE-panel autohide (At the moment neznayu have such a function or > not I didnt find it) We have it. The user is not able to find an existing functionality might mean a potential usability bug here. > 3) Some usefull plugins (weather plugin, currency rate and etc...) The most useful way to know the weather is to open your window so no plugin is needed. Currency rate might be useful for someones. I'm not against it but this should be optional and should be an unloadable plugin in lxpanel-plugins rather than a built-in one. > Also I liked the job from the wiki: >>Integrate Twitter, Facebook etc. into an LXLauncher Dashboard tab. If this is going to be done, it should be optional and should be a dynamic module which can be unloaded as this requires much system resources. > implementations of these ideas, I would like to activities in the > summer, the project Google Summer of Code.
