Oh, my! Very early...
procedure start, n, v, e
locals counter, name
mov eax, [ local v ] ; Initialise subsystems
mov eax, [ eax ]
cld
mov [ local name ], eax
mov [ luxasm_command ], eax
call Memory.initialise
The "brk(0)" occurs in Memory.initialise, so we're not even getting that
far. I suspect "mov eax, [eax]", which suggests we're not finding
"argv[0]" - the program name. A wild guess, without being able to
duplicate it. If "they" have changed the startup stack from one version
to another, we're totally gefukt. Oh, my!
In spite of the fact that LuxAsm is generally considered to be "dead",
*I* consider this valuable feedback (if not entirely welcome news).
Thanks, Nathan!
Best,
Frank

Well... Easter's coming up... you never know... > I was hoping for a > nice ASM IDE for FreeBSD!!! I understand that Linux executables will run on BSD... dunno if that's "all of 'em"... Jeff Owens has got an IDE for Linux: http://members.save-net.com/jko%40save-net.com/asm/ Not ideal... the pop-up documentation is for Linux (and that's it's best feature, IMO). However, the thing is highly configurable... might be useful to you... As you know (?), the "asmutils" macros allow the same code to be assembled for Linux (with parameters in registers) or BSD (parameters on the stack). There are other differences - the directory entry structure is different, for example(!). These macros account for that... no doubt, there's more to be done. I've got a little "experiment" using those macros at: http://home.comcast.net/~fbkotler/lxtest4.tar.bz2 (don't let the name of the executable fool you - this ain't LuxAsm!!!). I don't recall if I got any feedback from you on it - it apparently works on *some* other machines besides mine... I think someone said it worked on BSD, but I don't know if it was assembled to "native" BSD or not. I imagine it looks like crap on any machine besides mine - I "hard coded" a lot of assumptions into it... The main "experiment" was to see if I could get an Xwindow up - at all, even just on my machine. To that extent, it was a "success". I was also "experimenting" with calling conventions and stuff, so the code is a horrid mish-mash, and not well-commented, so it isn't something we want to "go forward" from! But it shows the basic "get a window" - one way to do it - which was news to me. The buttons are "home-made" - just text with a rectangle around 'em - probably *not* the way we want to do it. I was trying to *minimize* calls to Xlib - with the thought of possibly eliminating libraries completely, perhaps. A far more practical approach is to use "helper libraries" (mosaic, gtk+, whatever) in addition to Xlib. We need to decide exactly what we *are* going to do... > Question, as I don't quite remember, back when I heard of LuxAsm and > joined the list. An "editor" is an essential part of what we have in mind. I don't have the slightest idea how to write an editor, and to be honest, it sounds like a tedious, thankless job. You've got your vi folks and you've got your emacs folks, and you're not going to please everybody - unless you're "highly configurable", which sounds "highly complicated" to me. Someone with actual experience in writing an editor should be a tremendous help! > (with support for > many other languages) - I could really care less about HTML and the HTML > wizards.. but, I love using it to write C, Java, Perl, ASM, etc. Just > wondering what the overall "Description" of LuxAsm was to be. "An assembly language IDE with the editor written in C"??? The words that got me in trouble were "I think a port of RosAsm to Linux would be cool." Betov replied with "Okay, Frank, you're the chief maintainer of LuxAsm." I liked the name so much I started this project. :) What I initially had in mind was a literal port of RosAsm... with perhaps a couple "cheats" (no linkable object output is *not* gonna fly in *nix). But Betov got pissy about my "allowing" several "Randall Hyde supporters" to participate in the project - wanted all references to RosAsm removed. > > Any response is much appreciated, > > Danny > Ah, sh*t! No Way! I didn't think LuxAsm would end like this! I was hoping for a
nice ASM IDE for FreeBSD!!!
Question, as I don't quite remember, back when I heard of LuxAsm and
joined the list. Was the IDE to be written in ASM or just be an IDE for
ASM? If being written in ASM isn't a requirement, then I think I could
help with the implementation of it... if it were in C or Java. I am not
sure I am strong enough (nor have the time) to write an IDE in straight
ASM. I don't know about anyone else, but, can I get some other's input?
Would anyone else be willing to help?
And, are we looking at a Console based IDE (Much like Borland's
Pascal/Turbo C IDE (TurboVision)) or are we looking to do something in
X Windows?
I'm a developer for Bluefish, an X11 based HTML Editor (with support for
many other languages) - I could really care less about HTML and the HTML
wizards.. but, I love using it to write C, Java, Perl, ASM, etc. Just
wondering what the overall "Description" of LuxAsm was to be.
Any response is much appreciated,
Danny

The disadvantage of this being... you can't use '.' to start labels.
NASM syntax sounds fine, but as I mentioned before, my personal preference would be having all directives in their own namespace and perhaps we can drop NASM's required static type casting when the destination is obvious?

LuxAsm directive - prefix namespace dot " .<directive> "
LuxAsm internal type ? either as is or prefix namespace as above. " .<type> "
Syntax: NASMese without obvious static type casting " mov eax, 1000 "
Addressing: NASMese
Blocks: curly braces { }
That's about it. These are the simple basic things that need to be agreed on before the next steps can be taken. My preferences aside, I don 't really care what is the final agreement as long as there is an agreement!!
And here is something to spice things up:
Deadline to decide these things: March 15, 2006
After which the project can be considered:
1. DEAD untill...
2. someone takes matters into their own hands, and begins pumping out some code with their chosen format.
March 16. Project is officially dead.

There's something to be said for "#define" as a syntax - we can pick up
equates straight from C(the language) .h files. That's the way C(the

Other than that thought, I really don't have anything to add, at the

It would be really nice if the syntax could be decided. That is after all, the most important feature of the language.
Then there could be something to work from at least, maybe write some demos or tools, etc.
If my input means anything, here are a couple of my preferences for the language implementation:
1. I would prefer the language used directives rather than archaic symbols or symbol combinations (with the exception of curly braces).
2. Apart from the machine instructions, every directive (if any will be used) should be in their own namespace, preferably the dot namespace ".<directive>"
3. Blocks: Either use curly braces { } or .begin .end directives.
There is more of course, but baby steps...

And my PayPal account. And several credit cards. Funny thing is I don't have a Wells Fargo account, or a PayPal account (HELL, no!), or any credit cards. If you actually have a Wells Fargo account, and you're dumb enough to log onto this site, well... you don't have a Wells Fargo account any more... Best, Frank |

ran...@ea... wrote: > Hi All, > Just a quick copy from the Linux ASM mailing list. This will also > answer the question "is anyone using NASM anymore?" Thanks Randy! I was going to copy that post here, in case anyone's interested (I'll cc it to luxasm-devel, too - we need the traffic :). Jeff also posted this to "his" list: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DesktopLinuxAsm/ (I think that's "his" list... not very active) As an IDE, it isn't going to impress Betov - just a "shell" or "brick&brock" job. (which means you could use it with *any* assembler!) The help system is a gem! System calls indexed alphbetically, numerically, and by "topic", error numbers, signals, structures, equates, etc. all in one place (within "one click", I guess, if you've got the mouse enabled...). I haven't given it much of a workout, but it looks like a huge improvement over two (or so) versions ago when I last looked at it. For those looking for an IDE for Nasm/Linux (or Gas/Linux or Fasm/Linux or even HLA/Linux), it's well worth checking out! Anyone looked at the GAMBAS "ide-nasm"???
