Issuing Orders

Armies are represented on the battle map by game pieces that look like knights. Orders are issued by clicking the left-mouse button. There are three types of orders: 1) hold orders, 2) move orders (also called attack orders), and 3) support orders.

Hold orders are the most straightforward, they tell an army to hold its position. To issue a hold order, click on the army you wish to hold (it will be highlighted blue, see below), then click on it again. In no order is explicitly issued to an army on a given turn, it will assume a hold order.

Move or attack orders are the most common. To issue a move order, click on the army you wish to move. Next click the region where you wish the the army to move. If that region is owned by an enemy, or is currently occupied by an enemy army, the order is considered an attack order.

In a single turn, an army can be ordered to move to any country adjacent to the one it occupies currently. No army can move to a non-adjacent region. Regions connected by sea-ways (lines on the map) are considered adjacent.

The third type of order is a support order. Support helps to bolster the relative strength of an army. When two armies battle, the one with more support will always win.

To issue a support order, click on the army you wish to use for support. Press the 's' key on your keyboard, the message in the upper right hand corner of the screen should change. Next click on the army you wish to support.

Armies cannot support other armies which are supporting, they can only support armies which have been given move or hold orders. Armies can only support regions adjacent to their own. In the case of a move or attack order, they can only support where the target region is adjacent to their own. In these cases the supporting army need not be adjacent to the region the invading army moved from.

Support orders are cleared when the orders of the army being supported are changed. This means that all hold and move orders should be issued first, followed by support orders.

NOTE: It is always wise to check that the message in upper right corner verifies the orders you issued. If you click near a border, the game may have trouble registering which was the intended target region.

Support and Battle Outcomes

Battle outcomes in the game are completely deterministic. When multiple armies clash, the one with the most support will always win. If their levels of support are evenly matched, then the status quo is maintained. In cases where one or more armies is invading an occupied region, this means the occupying army wins. In cases where one or more armies are invading and unoccupied region, this means that all invaders "bounce off" each other and the region remains unoccupied.

Buildings provide support to armies of their own color (on their own region). They do not provide as much support as an army, but provide an advantage that can break ties in your favor. If a supporting army is attacked, then the support it offers is cut. It can be treated as if it had been issued a hold order instead of a support order. Support from buildings cannot be cut.

When an occupying army loses, it is displaced from the region. It will retreat into any adjacent, unoccupied region of its own color. If no such region exists, it will retreat into any adjacent, unoccupied region of any color except the region where the invading army originated. If no such region exits, the losing army will be disbanded.

Quick Reference

  • When two or more armies clash, the one with the most support will win.
  • When two equally matched armies clash, the status quo is maintained.
  • Buildings provide support to armies of their own color (within their region), though not as much as an army.
  • If a supporting army is attacked, the support is cut. Support from buildings may not be cut.
  • When an army is driven out of a region, it will retreat to an adjacent, unoccupied region. If no such region exists, the army will be disbanded.
