Also, if you have a linksys wrt54g (and some other routers as well), you can install alternative firmware (since linksys wrt54g{,s}'s run linux) that will enable bridging. OK, I have a 99% solution for the problem. After comparing the lsmods as Jim suggested, I discovered that neither Knop= pix nor Fedora load usbmouse when there are USB mice present (as LTSP does)= , so I went to the client=B4s shell and typed: >rmmod usbmouse The response was: >usb.c: Deregistering driver usbmouse >input: USB HID v1.00 Mouse [0d3d:0001] on usb1:3.1 This was encouraging, so I switched to the GUI and the PS/2 mouse was worki= ng properly via the USB<>PS/2 converter - Success! I then tried playing with the startup scripts (usb.rc in particular), but n= othing seemed to have a positive effect. I ended up creating a script in rc= .d to remove the offending driver, then added "RCFILE_01 =3D noUSBmouse" to= lts.conf. This works well. My guess is that LTSP needs usbmouse to perform some initialization functio= n(s), but that it later gets in the way and must be removed. usbmouse does = not even seem to be required for USB mice, as when I plug a USB mouse in af= ter the system starts up it is immediately recognized and works (in *additi= on* to the mouse connected via the USB<>PS/2 converter!). This parallels my= experience with Fedora and Knoppix. I say this is a 99% solution because the script seems to be called twice - = despite there only being one place in the initialization sequence where the= script might be called. This does not seem to have any ill effects, so it= =B4s more of a curious annoyance than anything else. Side note: Neither Fedora nor Knoppix load usbkbd either, but rmmod=B4ing t= his module seems to occasionally cause odd behavior. It seems better to lea= ve this one alone... =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D I cannot report that this is a comprehensive solution or that it will work = on all USB<>PS/2 converters, so my experience should be considered anecdota= l. My particular converter is an Omega Technologies #UAPS13. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Thanks to Jim for illuminating the path that ultimately led to the solution. And Jim, I hope that you read this before you get to the "War and Peace" em= ail I sent yesterday evening - or at least before you respond to it... Hi Folks I have been fiddling with NAS on LTSP for awhile. I sort of having it working but not quite there yet which prompted this post. I have followed Richard June 's article, Configuring ARTS to work with LTSP servers and terminals and another article, LTSP arts Howto, both can be found on http://www.bravegnuworld.com/~rjune/ltsp/audio/ However, I can't quite follow Richard's instructions on Configuring ARTS. I have compiled and built NAS, recompile arts to recognize the presence of NAS. By default the compiled binary is installed on /usr/local/KDE which is not being picked up by the system start up. However, I set the install directory to overwriter the original artsd binary. I don't follow steps on reinstalling NAS for LTSP, point iv. In which he asks readers to run ltspadmin to install ltsp_core. I use auplay to play KDE_Startup.wav and the music plays on my terminal. It looks like NAS is working properly on the thin client. I open kde-control-centre and go to the sound I/O tab and I change the I/O method to nas. This is a sign that artsd is recompiled successfully and recognise NAS. And I checked every box on the tab there except for 'Enable network transparency' and 'Exchange security and reference info over X11 server'. And test the sound by pressing the button. Nothing heard from the terminal. I kill the artsd process and start it using the command console and also increase the debug level. If I click the test button. The console has shown "play /usr/share/sounds/KDE_Start.wav" and also gives output when it is finished. However, no sound can be heard. Same as Xmms, I can see output and arts seems to be receiving input from the appls but somehow it is not sent to the terminal. Can anyone point me to the right direction in diagnose this problem. I've had a lot of success with both the commercial NX server and the open source FreeNX server in my lab environment. The commercial server let me kill a thin client then log into a different one and have everything exactly as I left it. You could do the same thing with vnc but you should tunnel it over ssh or something similar if you're at all concerned about security since vnc sends everything in the clear and there are a lot of readily available tools for recording vnc traffic. NX also has the distinction of having incredible compression. I wouldn't have believed it myself if I hadn't tested it but I had a full remote Gnome session in under 10 kilobits/sec and the only way you could tell it wasn't native was that pixmaps and things like that had that "vnc look" to them. If you turn down the compression some it looks just fine. This might not be necessary if all your machines are on a LAN but if you want to put the server and clients on different sides of a minimal WAN link it's a killer feature. I set it up based on the the instructions that came with the NX_LTSP package at http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/WorkInProgress that someone at Symbiont appears to have made. All in all it took probably an hour to setup and part of that was waiting for my demo license from NoMachine to show up. If you need any other help let me know. A detailed description of the > problem is below. You will probably have to edit the xdmcp configuration by hand. It is not so difficult, but the actual procedure is different depending on which display manager you use. If you use GDM and gnome, you can use the graphical configuration tool for it, or edit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf and set enabled=true in the [xdmcp] section. Search the internet for how to do it in kdm or xdm (or you might be able to do it from the KDE configuration tool). Just search on google and see. If you still can't fix it then just come back with more details about your setup (distro, display manager and desktop environment). // Dag Sverre |

Hi! I am having problems with LTSP and getting it to work, My major problem is I seem not to be able to get XDCMP to work, It says its installed but I cannot enable it. A detailed description of the problem is below. [root@... ~]# ltspcfg ltspcfg - Version 0.10 Checking Runlevel....: 5 Checking Ethernet Interfaces Checking Dhcpd..... Checking Tftpd....... Checking Portmapper... Checking nfs.... Checking xdmcp...........Found: xdm, gdm, kdm Using: none! Checking /etc/hosts. Checking /etc/hosts.allow. Checking /etc/exports. Checking lts.conf. Press <enter> to continue.. (As it shows xdmcp is clearly not using any type of display manager above) ltspcfg v0.10 The Linux Terminal Server Project (http://www.LTSP.org) S - Show the status of all services C - Configure the services manually Q - Quit Make a selection: (I make the selection C to configure services manually and 7 for XDMCP configuration in the next screen, When I am prompted for a login I choose yes, followed by yes for graphcial login) ltspcfg v0.10 The Linux Terminal Server Project (http://www.LTSP.org) Xdmcp is the protocol used by a display manager to present a login dialog box on the workstation. Do you want to enable (y/n) ? y Normally, when a display manager is running, it will launch an X server on the console screen, giving you a graphical login on the console as well as on the workstations. Some people prefer to keep their server in character mode. Do you want to disable the graphical login on the server (y/n) [Y]? y Can't call method "configure" without a package or object reference at /usr/sbin/ltspcfg line 2426. You have new mail in /var/spool/mail/root [root@... ~]# [b}(This is where I believe the problem resides but I don't know what object or reference I should use on this line)[/b] Here is a copy of my ltspcfg file Normally, when a display manager is running, it will launch an X server on the console screen, giving you a graphical login on the console as well as on the workstations. Some people prefer to keep their server in character mode. EOF $disable_console_x = main::get_yn( "Do you want to disable the graphical login on the server", main::get_conf_value( "DISABLE_CONSOLE_X" ) ); main::set_conf_value( "DISABLE_CONSOLE_X", $disable_console_x ); $self->{current_dm}->configure (); } } main::cont(); } # sub configure_screen sub get_disable_console_x { return( $disable_console_x ); 2433,5 64% Line 2426 is "$self->{current_dm}->configure ();" My question is should this have a pointer to it and if so what should it be? I have been stuck on this grey screen for a week and a half and don't know what to do, I have followed all tutorials but with no luck. Can some one please pint me in the right direction. -- Unix is user friendly -its's just picky about it's friends. |

Most SOHO routers (D-Link, NetGear, Linksys) have an option to turn off the DHCP function. Check the manual or on-line helpto see how to do it. If so, you can probably disable the router as a dhcp server and use your ltsp server to serve up addresses. Is this an option? Jesse McDonnell |

One NIC controls the LTSP network while the LTSP box acts as gateway and connects to you router. In that case, set up a dhcp daemon on your terminal server, declare it "not authoritative", DO NOT use a range statement, but one host myhostname { hardware ethernet 00:c0:1d:c0:ff:ee; fixed address 192.168.12.34; filename "/vmlinuz.ltsp"; } like stanza per host. Be sure to use IP addresses that are not used by the router (they mostly can be configured to only use e.g. ....100 to ...199 only or similar. Even easier it would be to switch off DHCP altogether on that box, but if that's no option.... If your router hands out filenames, this is going to be ugly. In that case, you need to use alternate DHCP ports .... should be documented in the LTSP wiki. Hth Anselm |

Maybe it isn't a good idea, but I've installed "slay" from debian on my FC2 server. Slay kills off all processes belonging to a specific userid. I then added if [ "$USER" != "root" ] ; then rm -rf /tmp/* slay $USER fi to /etc/X11/gdm/PostSession/Default Now slay completely kills off all userid processes on logout. If this isn't a good idea, I'd be interested as to why...It seems to work great at killing off zombies. Before "slay" zombie firefox and KDE stuff would pile up. I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to LTSP. John --- Pete <pvdw@...> wrote: > Techs wrote: > > >Hello > > > >Using the new release of K12 4.2. In my case gconfd kept 'running' because another app for the same user didn't stop. As soon as I killed that 'other' app, gconfd would stop (after 1 to 30 seconds) Try killing manually the ssh-agent process and see if the gconfd procees dissappear after x sec of time. There's been work on VNC+zebedee+LTSP and NX+LTSP. I've done some VNC+zebedee stuff myself, and have something I consider resistant to replay attacks, but not MITM attacks. It's reasonably fast. It helps a lot on high latency networks. My code could really use some polishing up, and probably a daemon for stopping and starting Xvnc's and zebedee's on the server. NX is supposed to be blazingly fast even on very low bandwidth networks - and probably high latency nets as well, since apparently you can use one or more proxies with it. I ran across a script for setting up LBX recently, but the author suspects that NX is a more modern alternative. I haven't heard much about DXPC for some time, and never in an LTSP context. Hello Using the new release of K12 4.2. The only issue seems to be that after a user logs off 2 processes stay running. They are ssh agent and I think the second is gconfd-2. If the user logs on 5 times there will be 5 sets of processes. Each is only a few meg but it adds up. It is an issue at all 4 locations. The users are using ice by default but the option for gnome is there. Thanks for any help Mark |

If > so I'm very sorry. If you're using D-S-L, then you aren't doing LTSP. That said, you can do this. First, treat the 64MB CF as your root partition; it gets everything you need to boot, and nothing else. This means /boot, /etc, /lib, /bin, and /sbin. You will need smbclient and its libraries, but you won't need nfsclient. Then copy /usr to your SMB server. mv /usr /usr2 # This moves your /usr out of the way, # where your system can't use it to # cheat on the tests but where you can # still get to it if we've left anything out. mkdir /usr # Make a place for SMB://usr to mount # edit /etc/fstab and add an entry for /usr. mount /usr Once you've moved /usr to your SMB server, move /var and /home. /var is much easier to move than /usr, and /home should be a piece of cake. You should reboot a time or two to make sure that everything works, then delete the old /usr2, /var2, and /home2 directories. Good luck! -- David Johnston <david@...> |

Well I'm not sure if its your configuration file but one of your usernames= =20 have a / on it. I would suggest using SubMount. (subfs) Because even when Automount is=20 working you need to cd into the directory first i believe. How do I get Windows to act as a linux thinclient server? Actually my thinclient has a 64mb compact flash card with damnsmalllinux on it and I'd like to give it access to more storage but I only have a Windows computer available. So tftpd isn't a requirement. I don't think just samba and NTFS will work will it because permission support is not good enough; /dev and proc would go crazy? Found it hard to google for this but I'm sure it's probably an FAQ? If so I'm very sorry. |
