I found the way to do it. You need version 4.1 of GCC (which is not the one we have). The manual has a new "cross-profiling" section that describes two compiler environment variables called GCOV_PREFIX and GCOV_PREFIX_STRIP that allow you to control where the .da files go.
Sorry if I wasted anyone's time! Hope not.

Subject: GCOV files
My name is Marta, I am a software developer at Xerox, in Welwyn Garden City (England) and I am fairly new to Linux development. I am so grateful that there are forums and mailing lists where one can ask questions!
I am trying to integrate GCOV and LCOV into our test environment, but I have a problem with the .da file generation. The .da file names are hardcoded with full path on the object files and we would need to be able to change the path where those files are generated. Is there a way to do so?
Thanks very much for your help,
