I seem to be unable to use the logrotate feature within the OS to rotate log files that looperng creates. I have to stop looperng process and run the logrotate. Is there a way to rotate logs without stopping the looperng process? ThanksRavi |

I'm one of the ones that would love to see Looper thrive and continue, yet sadly am not able to help it do that at this point in time. I think SNMPv3 support is very important for this to happen, however I'll admit that I'm kind of not thrilled by relying on another daemon though. I haven't looked recently, is that the only perl module that provides decent SNMPv3 support? -Dustin On Mon, Aug 4, 2014 at 3:29 PM, Eckles, David <Dav...@in...> wrote: > Beginning to work on adding SNMPv3 support to looper as we need to support it now and I have yet to find something as useful and flexible as LooperNG has been for us. Beginning to work on adding SNMPv3 support to looper as we need to support it now and I have yet to find something as useful and flexible as LooperNG has been for us. I'm currently headed down the route of Net-SNMP, using the embedded Perl module NetSNMP::TrapReceiver. I'm at the point where I have snmptrapd configured and a basic Perl module in place that is successfully dumping the contents of all traps received (including v3, both traps and informs). This of course is all outside of LooperNG. The approach I'm planning on is to rewrite snmpd_in to use snmptrapd with the embedded Perl to dump the incoming traps and align the variables with those that Looper is already expecting, replacing SNMP_Session, of course. I'm curious if you went down the same road and perhaps had some tips? Or did you go a different route with regard to trap processing? Or did you not even get to this part?? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!! DJE -----Original Message----- From: Jacob Steinberger [mailto:tre...@re...] Sent: Thursday, July 10, 2014 11:01 AM To: Looper/LooperDB mailing list. Just curious if there is any news on the development effort. We are getting to the position where we need to be able to support SNMPv3, so I was wondering if any development has been done toward that goal. If not, I may need to take on a rewrite of the snmpd_in module myself. >From my research, it appears that the strongest candidate for this is NetSNMP which ties into the system-level Net-SNMP daemon over the Net::SNMP - would you concur? Subject: Re: [Looper-devel] Looper "2.0" It's going somewhere, but isn't necessarily going anywhere quickly. There hasn't been a lot of demand, either. We're currently looking to use AnyEvent to modularize the system with IP sockets for distribution (yeah, I doubt anyone needs or would use the feature, but hey, thinking big). But we're trying to write it in a manner that if you want to use POE, you can, or if you want to use a real message queue server, you can, or .. or .. I'm trying to make sure the module requirements are flexible for the environment. Since SNMPv3 is more of a module, and the rewrite is more from a core-out development, the core would be first followed by something like the SNMPv3 module. Though I say it isn't going anywhere quickly, we're probably close to having standard syslog and SNMP testable from a basic function and throughput standpoint ... nothing I'd toss into production yet. Hello, I have an environment where LooperNG is installed as a dumb trap forwarder so that we can duplicate an event stream into separate environments. On the one side traps are forwarded unchanged - this part is working fine. On the other side, I need to change the source address to be a natted value rather than the actual IP of the managed host (existing IP information cannot be forwarded to this environment). I have written into the Looper rules file, opening and reading from a lookup file that contains these natted addresses and passing them into a hash. I have print statements that show this is working as expected with the correct nat address for the original IP Address. My problem comes assigning this to the trap values in a OID position. Ideally it needs to overwrite the existing value because we cannot pass any of the existing IP information, but I cannot seem to identify the correct field name to update. I have been experimenting with the $OUT{enhancetrap} to try and append a string to the varbinds of the raw trap and this works to an extent except that it assigns it to the last available varbind and I cannot seem to reference a specific varbind that I want to change the value of. I have attached a copy of the rules, such as they stand (although there are some non-final parts as I have been playing around with various permutations to try and get this working.) Can anyone offer any advice here? Thanks in advance, Ed This message contains information which may be confidential and/or privileged. Cool - let me know when you have something you'd like to have beta tested and I can probably help out with that. It sounds like you are working on the core first - have you chosen a module for SNMP, as I believe there are a couple available? I may need to retrofit our production installation with SNMPv3 support sooner than later, which hopefully will fall within my skill level. Hopefully it won't be too huge of an undertaking to swap out SNMP_Session with Net::SNMP or similar. I might have something to share on the SNMP module front when you get to that point - -----Original Message----- From: Jacob Steinberger [mailto:tre...@re...] Sent: Friday, May 10, 2013 3:31 PM To: Looper/LooperDB mailing list. Yea, that was kind of where I was getting stuck as I was going through the code. It looks like SNMP_Session could handle with some hacking but I wasn't sure if I was reading the package correctly. I've had to remove LooperNG from the mix for a while and just spin the probes up on the two interfaces. I've lost logging of raw traps and copying of all production traps to development for rules file testing. I can live without both options for a while but would like to get looper back in the mix. Hopefully Dustin's fix will work. -----Original Message----- From: Jacob Steinberger [mailto:tre...@re...] Sent: Friday, January 25, 2013 10:43 AM To: Looper/LooperDB mailing list. James, Sorry for the late reply. The easiest solution would be to grab the latest snmpd_in and snmptrap_out from the Mercurial repos: http://looper.hg.sourceforge.net/hgweb/looper/looperng/raw-file/bb75204c9844/looperng/modules/input/snmpd_in http://looper.hg.sourceforge.net/hgweb/looper/looperng/raw-file/bb75204c9844/looperng/modules/output/snmptrap_out And overwrite the existing ones with those two. Once you do that, your rules will simple be something like: %OUT = (); $OUT{rawtrap} = $IN {rawtrap}; if (defined($IN{addaddr})) { $OUT{addaddr} = $IN{addaddr}; $OUT{agentaddr} = $IN{agentaddr}; } SEND ('trapgen2'); Once you get that going, you can start getting fancier by deciding where to send traps based upon $IN{enterprise} or $IN{agentaddr}. -Dustin On Sun, Sep 30, 2012 at 7:43 PM, James Pifer <je...@ob...> wrote: > [I apologize if this message comes throughs as html. SNMPv3 is already on the requirements list for default support. Not sure which module/solution we'll be going with yet ;) Jacob On 6/22/2012 6:34 PM, Eckles, David wrote: > Great news - are you looking at implementing SNMPv3 capability, which would or course happen if moving away from SNMP_Session? It'll require some work, but it shouldn't be as bad. v1->v2c (and back) required more changes due to the trap->notification conversion. Going from v2c->v3 (and back) keeps the same basic information, just changes the protocol security model. -Dustin On Fri, Jun 22, 2012 at 6:34 PM, Eckles, David <Dav...@in...> wrote: > Great news - are you looking at implementing SNMPv3 capability, which would or course happen if moving away from SNMP_Session? Great news - are you looking at implementing SNMPv3 capability, which would or course happen if moving away from SNMP_Session? Any thought as to Net::SNMP vs Net-SNMP? I'm looking at doing a "2.0" rewrite moving away from POE. If you've always wanted a feature, now's probably a good time to request it. Jacob |

Now you have me interested ... I hate POE, which is why I dislike developing the core Looper and only tend to do modules. Except that Looper uses SNMP_Session for trap handling. Moving it to Net::SNMP was one of my TODOs, along with replacing the text passing with something else (YAML or JSON?) and potentially replacing POE with AnyEvent. I cant work on Looper at this time because of issues beyond my control, and I haven't found anybody to maintain it in the interim. So right now it is sadly on hiatus. -Dustin On Apr 4, 2012 7:41 PM, "Jacob Steinberger" <tre...@re...> wrote: > Net::SNMP supports V3, so it should take just a bit more tweaking to get > it to work. > > Or were you looking for something different/more? > > Jacob > > On 4/4/2012 4:50 PM, Eckles, David wrote: > > We've been running looperng (maintaining/enhancing it ourselves) in > > production for quite some time with very satisfactory results. Net::SNMP supports V3, so it should take just a bit more tweaking to get it to work. Or were you looking for something different/more? We've been running looperng (maintaining/enhancing it ourselves) in production for quite some time with very satisfactory results. However, as time marches on, the need to support SNMPv3 is becoming more necessary. It appears that this project has been abandoned, but I wanted to check to see if there is any background work that may be going on or if there is a successor. Thank you! |
