Summer 2005 Update The site received some positive review on NewsForge. See: http://www.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=04/12/09/1630229&from=rss . This boosted the user base. We're still #2 in the Google rankings (using Linux links as the search term). We continue to make improvements to the website for our users. Here are some highlights. *Added an RSS feed *Added creation dates for new bookmarks listed under the 100 latest links *Added Special Link Collections on first page This includes: "Must See!" Links "Cool!" Links Latest 100 Links Besides the usual database maintenance activities to eliminate pesky bad links and adding new links (the fun part), I have been working on classification problems. Here is a list of new sub-categories I've added since the last release: Linux General--Licenses Hardware--Diagnostics Networking--DNS Networking--File Transfer Networking--LDAP Networking--Web Servers Software Applications--Aggregators Software Applications--Accessibility Technology Software Applications--Libraries (as in books)--Archives/Repositories Software Applications--Web & Content Management System (CMS) under Web Software Applications--Publishing Created TeX sub-category under Publishing Transferred Software Applications--Office to Software Applications--Publishing Software Applications--Genealogy X Window System--Complete X Systems I plan to get another release out sometime this summer, but this is the time of year I put on my gardening hat so I can't guarantee when this will happen. :-) If you have any sites you would like me to add or spot any corrections, please email me at this address. Best wishes to you all for a pleasant summer. Barbara ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Barbara Irwin Victoria, B.C. Hi Everybody!
It's been a few months since the last update here -- this is a low-traffic
list. :-)
Things are going well for the LoLL project. Since April 23rd when 1.1.0 was
released, we've been averaging ~500 visits/day at our website. Work
continues on maintaining and updating the links database and site. Because
of these constant improvements, LoLL is now #2 on Google when doing a search
for Linux links. This is very gratifying for the LoLL team.

My apologies for the spam you received today via the LoLL-general mailing
list. I have further configured the mailing list to reduce spam received.
I also would like to take this opportunity to invite you to check out LoLL
and note the improvements to the look of the site. One of our developers,
Alan Irwin and also my husband :-), has been working like a dog getting the
site W3C compliant, revising the change, submit forms, improving the search
engine so a user can search by url. Wahoo!
I'm in the home stretch before the next release. Stay tuned.

Good news -- as of December 26, 2002, the LoLL project has had 100,193 page
views at the SourceForge site. Not bad statistics for just one year of
viewing. Bring on the next 100,000! :-)
Watch for another release next month.
Happy New Year everyone.

Since the last update in August the LoLL project's daily usage continues at the 300 to 400 mark. Downloads have dropped off, but expect that to change when I issue the next release in the next while. Watch this list for the announcement. :-) Of course, if you can't wait for all the new bookmarks and improvements, you can always use anonymous cvs to download the lastest version right now! Here are the summaries for August to October; August page views: 10,876 August downloads: 16 September page views: 9,297 September downloads: 13 October page views: 9,748 October downloads: 6 Total number of new bookmarks added since last update (August 20, 2002): 398 Total number of unique bookmarks: 4,038 I continue to receive url suggestions from our users. These definitely improve the site, so keep them coming. My policy is to respond to all suggestions if an email address is supplied. New Since Release 1.0.1 *Added Home Networking sub-category in Networking. *Reviewed Networking--Browsers section and deleted outdated urls. *Added Tcl sub-category in Programming Links. *Moved all Tcl urls to Programming Links--Tcl. *Added Business / Enterprise sub-category in Software Applications. *Consolidated all HOWTOs into the Documentation--HOWTOs category. In keeping with LoLL policy, documentation links tend to appear twice in LoLL; once in a Documentation sub-category and once in the applicable subject category. *Added Search Engines sub-category in Software Applications. *Moved all search engine urls within Software Applications to Software Applications--Search Engines *Moved all search engine urls in other categories to Software Applications--Search Engines. *Revisions to following sub-categories: Linux General--Certification => Linux General--Certification / Training Linux General: User Groups - Local to VLUG => Linux General- User Group Networking--VoIP Related => Networking--VoIP Online Stores and Commercial Stuff--Bookstores/Publishers => Bookstores / Publishers Software Applications--Backup/Restore Apps =>Backup / Restore Software Applications--Demo Apps => Demo Software Applications--Office Apps => Office *Added Text Editors sub-category in Software Applications. *Consolidated all text editor urls into Software Applications--Text Editors *Reviewed resources available on Linux hardware compatibility and added 2 bookmarks to the Hardware category. *Reviewed Networking--Email Clients/Servers. Added 5 bookmarks and deleted 2 outdated bookmarks. *Reviewed all urls in X Window System--GNOME. Revised 2 bookmark urls and deleted 2 outdated bookmarks. *Copied all GNOME-related urls and moved to X Window System--GNOME. *Reviewed Advocacy Category to ensure links are still relevant. Database Maintenance The htcheck report continues to be run every week to 10 days - the last report was run on November 8th. The average number of problem urls identified usually is about 60-70. Many of these are server timeout problems, which are usually fixed quickly; others are redirects, and the rest are those pesky 404s, which involves detective work on my part. As stated in my earlier update, whenever possible I email the website maintainer to determine the status of their website or if there is an alternative site to use instead. Since the last update to this list 60 urls have been deleted and in many cases these were replaced by equivalent sites found via Google. Running the htcheck report and dealing with the problems on a regular basis has gradually reduced the number of problems appearing on the report. The end result is a better site. If any of you spot out-of-date bookmarks that you think should be removed, please let me know. Loads of Linux Links (LoLL)--Version 1.0.1 Released WHAT: Database and software to generate a website with 3000+ subject-classified and searchable Linux links for all levels of Linux users. WHERE: Loads of Linux Links (LoLL) home page (http://loll.sourceforge.net); project page (http://sourceforge.net/projects/loll); file release area (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=42381); CVS repository (http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=42381), mailing list (http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/loll-general), and the generated website (http://loll.sourceforge.net/linux/links) which is the place to do your Linux searching! WHY: Provides convenient access to information needed by all levels of Linux users. HOW: LoLL GPLed software and data (scripts, configuration files, and a bookmark file that contains the basic link information), are used in combination with bk2site (http://bk2site.sourceforge.net) to generate the Loads of Linux Links website (http://loll.sourceforge.net/linux/links). WHO: Andrew Willard (wil...@us...) and Barbara E. Irwin (be...@us...). The purpose of the Loads of Linux Links project is to collect, organise, classify and maintain important URLs about Linux and the Open Source movement for all levels of Linux users. The LoLL project now has 3000+ links which are updated regularly. What's New in Version 1.0.1 *Deleted invalid and out-of-date links. This database maintenance is time consuming (even though we use htcheck to find all links where there might be problems), but we feel this effort is an important part of LoLL's mission to make accessible nothing but the highest-quality Linux information. *Added many links. These far outweighed the deletions so our net number of links has actually gone up by 300! *Added a python script to generate a nicely formatted list of our category hierarchies. *Category renaming and reorganization. This is part of an on-going effort to make our classification of links as useful as possible to our users. *A number of category renamings. *Several minor category reorganizations. *Reorganization of the Distributions category. *Added the following sub-categories: Desktop, Embedded, Meta Sites, Mini, and Special Purpose. We link only to the more important distributions and depend on the meta sites to link to a more complete list of Linux distributions. *Reorganization of the Documentation category. *Added the following sub-categories: FAQs, Mailing Lists, Internationalization, and Publications. Note that documentation links tend to appear twice in LoLL; once in a Documentation sub-category and once in the applicable subject category. *Added Meta Sites sub-category to the following categories: Distributions, Documentation--HOWTOs, Games, and Security and Privacy. *Created a LoLL mailing list. In the last three months there has been so much interest in this project (25,000 web hits and 200 downloads) we felt it was time to create a mailing list for interested users. To subscribe see http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/loll-general. This project originally began as a service for the Victoria Linux Users' Group (VLUG, http://vlug.org) but in the true spirit of Linux, we decided to share this valuable resource with the wider Linux community by putting the Loads of Linux Links project on SourceForge. Like Linux, this is a work in progress so stay tuned here on the mailing list for futher update announcements concerning additional links and revised subject categories. Also, like Linux, no one owns this project -- it's GPLed so the project can never be hijacked by proprietary interests! The current contributors to the project are Andrew Willard, past president of VLUG with extensive experience with Linux hardware and software; Barbara E. Irwin, current vice-president of VLUG with 30 years experience as a professional librarian; and, most importantly, users of LoLL who submit new or changed Linux-related URL's for the project with the assurance that their contribution will remain under the GPL forever. Resources The generated LoLL website (http://loll.sourceforge.net/linux/links) which is normally updated on a daily basis. This is the place to do your Linux searching! LoLL home page (http://loll.sourceforge.net). LoLL project page (http://sourceforge.net/projects/loll). LoLL file release area (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=42381) which is normally updated several times per year. LoLL CVS repository (http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=42381) which is normally updated on a daily basis. This is the place to obtain the latest bookmarks.html file that is used to generate our website. LoLL mailing list (http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/loll-general) VLUG (http://vlug.org) -- the sponsor for the initial effort on this project. Thank You!
