It looks like the UID error, which John mentioned in passing, was the real key to all of this. I was able to reproduce that same error during my own testing here. The real bug here was that my newer/better/faster network code was returning some junk whenever reading a lot of data at once. Apparently this junk was ignored by just enough of the code that I never noticed it until just now. So, the problem should be fixed, and build 201 should now be even faster than 199 was. P.S. This bug may have been the cause of the large-attachment-download issues that have been recently reported, so I suggest testing that again as well.
